The problem with sorting by price
Every phone recycling comparison site in the UK sorts by price. The highest offer goes to the top. You click it. Done.
Except it is not that simple.
The highest-priced recycler might have a 3.8 star Trustpilot rating and a pattern of revaluing phones on arrival — quoting £200 and then offering £140 when your phone lands. The second-highest might have 4.7 stars, pay within 24 hours and have a 30-day return policy if anything goes wrong.
Which is actually the better deal?
This is the problem GadgetRank is built to solve. Price is one factor. It is not the only factor.
What we actually look at
When we list a retailer on GadgetRank, we assess them across five criteria before they appear on a single page.
1. Price — yes, price matters. We compare live prices and always show you the best current offer. But a small price premium from a retailer with outstanding trust credentials is often worth it.
2. Trust score — we check Trustpilot before listing any retailer. Our minimum threshold is 4.0 stars on a meaningful number of reviews. Retailers who drop below this are removed. We review this quarterly. If a retailer's service declines, they come off the site.
3. Warranty — for buy refurbished pages, we only list retailers offering a minimum 12-month warranty with battery health guaranteed at 80% or above. Retailers who replace batteries as standard get extra credit.
4. Payment speed — for sell pages, how quickly a recycler pays after inspecting your device matters enormously. We factor payment speed into our recommendations where data is available. A recycler that pays in 24 hours is meaningfully better than one that takes 7 days — even at similar prices.
5. Returns policy — for buy refurbished pages, we consider the return window. UK law gives you 14 days minimum. Retailers offering 30 or 45 days demonstrate significantly more confidence in their product quality and deserve recognition for it.
The recommended retailer feature
We are building a recommended retailer box for every device page on GadgetRank. This will highlight the single best place to buy or sell your specific device based on all five criteria — not just the cheapest price.
It will look something like this: a green-bordered card at the top of each comparison table, labelled "✓ GadgetRank recommends", showing the retailer's price alongside their trust score, warranty length and payment speed at a glance.
This is not something any other UK phone comparison site currently does. OnRecycle, SellMyMobile and Compare and Recycle all sort purely by price. GadgetRank will be the first to surface a genuine quality-weighted recommendation alongside the price comparison.
Why this matters more on the sell side
The stakes are particularly high when selling. You are handing over a phone worth £100–400, posting it to a business you have never met, and trusting that the offer they quoted is the offer they will actually pay.
Revaluation — where a recycler inspects your phone and offers you less than the quoted price — is the number one complaint in the phone recycling industry. It happens when sellers describe their phone's condition inaccurately. But it also happens when recyclers use aggressive revaluation as a tactic to acquire devices at below-quoted prices.
Our trust score requirement and pattern monitoring catches recyclers who do this systematically. A recycler with consistent Trustpilot complaints about unfair revaluations will not appear on GadgetRank — regardless of how high their quoted price is.
Our commercial model — and why it does not affect recommendations
GadgetRank earns commission when you click through to a retailer and complete a purchase or sale. We disclose this clearly on every page.
Commission does not influence which retailer we recommend. A retailer paying higher commission will not receive a better recommendation if their trust score, warranty or payment speed does not meet our standards. We have already declined to list retailers who approached us commercially but whose Trustpilot scores were below our threshold.
We also do not accept payment from retailers to appear higher in our comparison tables. Rankings are determined by our five-criteria assessment, not by commercial relationships. This is what independent means.
The goal
We want GadgetRank to be the site you trust when you have a £400 phone to sell or a £200 refurbished purchase to make. Not the site you use because it came up first in Google. The site you use because you know it is on your side.
Price is part of that. Trust is the rest.
