How to factory reset your iPhone before selling

June 2025

Before you send your iPhone to any recycler, you need to do two things: sign out of iCloud and factory reset the device. Skipping either step can reduce your payout or cause delays.

Step 1: Back up your data

Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Wait for it to complete. This saves everything to iCloud so you can restore it on your new phone.

Step 2: Sign out of iCloud

This is the most important step. Go to Settings → your name → scroll to the bottom → Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted. This removes Activation Lock, which prevents recyclers from resetting and reselling your phone.

If you skip this, most recyclers will reduce their offer or reject the phone entirely.

Step 3: Factory reset

Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Confirm when prompted. The phone will reboot to the setup screen — that means it's done.

What to do with your SIM

Remove your SIM card before posting the phone. Keep it — you'll need it for your new device.

Final check

Before boxing it up: is the screen showing "Hello"? Is your iCloud account removed? If yes to both, you're good to go.
