How does an eSIM work?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a rewritable chip built permanently into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you download a carrier profile digitally by scanning a QR code. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

The technical basics

Traditional SIM cards are removable chips that store your network credentials — your phone number, network authentication data and account information. An eSIM does exactly the same thing, but the chip is soldered into the phone's motherboard and can be reprogrammed remotely.

When you activate an eSIM plan, your network sends a profile to the chip over the internet. This profile contains everything the phone needs to connect to that network. You can store multiple profiles and switch between them in your phone's settings.

How to activate an eSIM in the UK

  1. Purchase an eSIM plan from a UK network or travel eSIM provider
  2. Receive a QR code by email
  3. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM on iPhone (or equivalent on Android)
  4. Scan the QR code with your camera
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate

The profile downloads in seconds. Your eSIM is active and ready to use.

Which phones support eSIM?

Apple: iPhone XS and later — all models

Samsung: Galaxy S20 and later, Galaxy Z Fold/Flip range

Google: Pixel 3 and later

Most flagship smartphones released from 2020 onwards support eSIM. Budget Android phones may not — check your specific model's specifications.

Can you use eSIM and physical SIM at the same time?

Yes — on dual SIM devices. Most modern flagships support one physical SIM and one eSIM running simultaneously. This is useful for running a UK number and a travel data eSIM at the same time.

Apple maintains a full list of eSIM compatible devices on their support site — check before purchasing a travel eSIM.

Common eSIM questions answered

Can I use an eSIM without Wi-Fi? You need Wi-Fi or mobile data to download an eSIM profile initially. Once installed, the eSIM works like any SIM card — no ongoing Wi-Fi required.

What happens to my eSIM if I change phones? Request a new eSIM from your network when you get your new phone. The process takes 5-10 minutes via app or customer service. Your number and plan transfer to the new device.

Can I have two eSIMs active simultaneously? Most phones support one physical SIM and one eSIM active at once. Some newer models (iPhone 13 and later) support dual eSIM without a physical SIM, but check your specific model.
