How does an eSIM work?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a rewritable chip built permanently into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you download a carrier profile digitally by scanning a QR code. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.
The technical basics
Traditional SIM cards are removable chips that store your network credentials — your phone number, network authentication data and account information. An eSIM does exactly the same thing, but the chip is soldered into the phone's motherboard and can be reprogrammed remotely.
When you activate an eSIM plan, your network sends a profile to the chip over the internet. This profile contains everything the phone needs to connect to that network. You can store multiple profiles and switch between them in your phone's settings.
How to activate an eSIM in the UK
- Purchase an eSIM plan from a UK network or travel eSIM provider
- Receive a QR code by email
- Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM on iPhone (or equivalent on Android)
- Scan the QR code with your camera
- Follow the on-screen prompts to activate
