giffgaff vs SMARTY — which is better in 2026?
giffgaff and SMARTY are two of the UK's most popular budget networks, but they run on completely different physical networks and have very different plan structures. Here is a full comparison to help you choose.
The key difference
giffgaff uses O2's network; SMARTY uses Three's network. Choose based on the coverage where you actually use your phone, the plan term and the allowances you need. A national coverage statement cannot tell you which will work better inside your home.
Start with the providers' giffgaff coverage checker and SMARTY coverage checker. Indoor reception and performance can differ from a map prediction.
Price comparison
Compare the providers' current giffgaff plans and current SMARTY plans at the same data allowance and commitment length. An introductory offer or an 18-month commitment is not equivalent to a rolling monthly plan.
Check the price after any introductory discount, the minimum term and the roaming allowance. This guide does not assume one provider is always cheaper. Prices and offers should be checked when you are ready to switch.
Coverage
Check your home, workplace and regular travel routes with each provider's coverage tool. If reliable indoor reception is essential, ask people using the relevant network in that location or test a suitable short-term plan before making a longer commitment.
Avoid choosing solely from a national ranking or the underlying network's name. The place you use the phone, the handset and the plan's supported features all matter. Our UK network coverage guide gives you further checks to make.
Roaming
Checked 8 September 2026. giffgaff's roaming page states up to 5GB of included data from your plan in its EU zone, subject to eligibility and your plan allowance. SMARTY's roaming page states up to 12GB of included EU data each plan month, subject to its fair-use rules and allowance. Neither figure means unlimited use abroad.
SMARTY's service should not be described as including Three's Go Roam benefits in 71 destinations. Outside its included EU destinations, SMARTY describes paid usage through out-of-plan add-ons. Check the exact country and charges before travelling.
| Roaming check | giffgaff | SMARTY |
|---|---|---|
| Included EU-zone data | Up to 5GB from the plan allowance | Up to 12GB from the plan allowance, subject to fair use |
| More data or other destinations | Check travel add-ons and destination charges | Check EU passes, add-ons and destination charges |
| Before travelling | Confirm destination eligibility and settings | Confirm destination eligibility and settings |

Which should you choose?
Consider giffgaff if O2 reception works well for you and the particular plan's cost and commitment suit your needs.
Consider SMARTY if Three reception works well for you and its plan offers the better overall package for your data use and travel needs.
Use the same criteria for alternatives on GadgetRank's SIM comparison. Our comparison covers the providers and offers we track; it is not a complete list of every UK plan. Check the network, term, allowance and final provider terms for each offer.
What about EE-based budget networks?
If neither O2 nor Three works well in the places you need coverage, check alternatives on a different network. Providers using the same underlying network can have different prices and features, so compare the individual plan rather than assuming the package is identical.
Our SIM-only buying guide and budget SIM guide provide further comparisons. A low headline price is useful only when the allowance, coverage and commitment meet your needs.
