giffgaff vs SMARTY — which is better in 2026?

giffgaff and SMARTY are two of the UK's most popular budget networks, but they run on completely different physical networks and have very different plan structures. Here is a full comparison to help you choose.

The key difference

giffgaff runs on O2's network — strong urban coverage, the only network with London Underground coverage across the full Tube network, and solid 4G across the UK.

SMARTY runs on Three's network — competitive unlimited data plans, good urban 5G, but weaker rural coverage than O2.

Price comparison

giffgaff and SMARTY both offer competitive pricing. SMARTY's unlimited data plans are generally cheaper — from £15–18/month for unlimited data versus giffgaff's £20–25 for equivalent plans. For data-heavy users who live in cities, SMARTY typically wins on price.

For moderate data users (under 10GB), both networks offer similar pricing at £6–12/month.

Coverage

giffgaff (O2) has better overall UK coverage, particularly outside major cities. If you regularly travel to rural areas, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, giffgaff is the safer choice.

SMARTY (Three) is strong in London, Manchester, Birmingham and other major cities. Rural coverage is noticeably weaker — Three has the lowest geographic coverage of the four major UK networks.

Roaming

giffgaff includes EU roaming on most plans at no extra charge — you use your UK allowance across Europe. SMARTY includes roaming in 71 destinations on eligible plans via Three's Go Roam, but check the specific plan before buying.

Which should you choose?

Choose giffgaff if: you want O2 coverage, you travel outside cities or to rural areas, you value strong EU roaming inclusion, or you want a well-established network with community support.

Choose SMARTY if: you want the cheapest unlimited data plan, you live and work in a major city, or you want a simple SIM-free rolling contract with no frills.

Neither network is on GadgetRank's current SIM comparison — we currently feature plans from budget networks running on EE's network. For the widest coverage at the lowest price, our listed networks (Ecotalk, Mozillion, 1pMobile) all run on EE which has the best UK geographic coverage of any network.

Ofcom's 2025 Connected Nations report provides the most up-to-date coverage data for all four UK mobile networks.

What about EE-based budget networks?

Neither giffgaff nor SMARTY runs on EE — the UK's network with the widest geographic 4G coverage. Budget MVNOs on EE (1pMobile, Ecotalk, Mozillion) provide EE-quality signal at prices that typically undercut both giffgaff and SMARTY.

Mozillion 25GB at £8/month on EE includes EU roaming and 5G. Ecotalk offers similar plans with carbon neutral credentials. For UK users who travel to rural areas, remote locations or simply want the strongest possible coverage, EE-based plans are the most reliable choice — and the prices are competitive with SMARTY's rates.

Why compare on GadgetRank?

GadgetRank is an independent UK comparison site — not affiliated with any retailer, recycler or network. Every comparison is based on live price data. There are no paid placements or sponsored rankings. The best current offer appears at the top because it is the best current offer, not because of any commercial arrangement.

All retailers listed on GadgetRank meet minimum quality criteria: Trustpilot score of 4.0 or above, minimum 12-month warranty, battery health guarantee, and devices unlocked to all networks. This baseline means every option on GadgetRank is a trustworthy choice — the comparison is purely about price and any additional perks.

GadgetRank updates all comparison prices daily from live merchant data feeds. The price you see is the price the retailer is paying or charging today — not a cached or estimated figure. Check back regularly as recycler prices and refurbished phone prices move frequently, particularly in the days surrounding major product announcements from Apple and Samsung.
