For other Android brands, third-party diagnostic apps can sometimes provide an estimate, though built-in manufacturer tools, where available, tend to be more reliable than third-party estimates.
What counts as good battery health
Most UK recyclers set 80% as the threshold for top-tier grading. Below this, expect a reduced offer, sometimes moved to a lower grade category entirely regardless of the phone's otherwise excellent cosmetic condition, since battery health is treated as a genuinely significant, standalone factor rather than a minor consideration.
Should you replace the battery first?
This depends entirely on your phone's overall resale value. For a high-value flagship, a battery replacement can genuinely be worth it if it moves your device into a higher grading tier, since the price difference between tiers can exceed the replacement cost. For lower-value older devices, the replacement cost may exceed the price difference it unlocks, making it not worth doing purely for resale purposes.

A common misconception is that closing background apps or using battery-saving modes improves battery health readings — these settings affect power consumption in the moment but don't change the underlying maximum capacity percentage, which only ever declines gradually through the battery's genuine charge cycle history.
