Cheapest way to use your phone abroad from the UK 2026

Using your phone abroad without preparation can cost £5-15 per day. Here are the genuinely cheapest options for every type of trip.

Option 1 — UK SIM with EU roaming (cheapest for Europe)

For any trip within the EU, the cheapest option is a UK SIM with EU roaming included at no extra cost. Ecotalk and Mozillion — both listed on GadgetRank — include EU roaming on every plan.

Countries covered: All 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Not covered: UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, USA and other non-EU destinations.

A Mozillion 25GB plan at £8/month costs nothing extra for EU travel. A single day of standard roaming on a major network costs more than this entire monthly plan.

Option 2 — Travel eSIM (cheapest for non-EU destinations)

For destinations outside EU roaming, a travel eSIM is the most cost-effective solution. Download before you leave, activate on arrival. Your UK SIM stays active for calls and texts.

Airalo — cheapest per-GB rates. EU eSIM from approximately £11 for 5GB. UAE from £12 for 5GB.

Holafly — unlimited data by duration. EU 7-day unlimited approximately £22. Best for heavy users.

BambooSIM and WorldSIM — listed on GadgetRank, UK-based customer support.

Total cost per non-EU trip: £8-30 depending on destination and data needs.

Option 3 — Local SIM from airport or shop (cheapest for long stays)

For trips of 2+ weeks, buying a local SIM on arrival typically beats travel eSIMs on cost. A French supermarket SIM: 50GB for approximately £10. A Spanish Vodafone tourist SIM: 100GB for £20.

The downside: your UK number is unreachable unless you use WhatsApp over data. Works well for longer holidays.

Option 4 — Wi-Fi only (free)

Turn mobile data off completely. Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) and content before leaving. Use WhatsApp and iMessage over hotel/café Wi-Fi. Cost: £0. Works well for city breaks where Wi-Fi is ubiquitous.

The hidden cost of doing nothing

The most expensive option — though it rarely feels like one — is using your phone abroad without any preparation and discovering the roaming charges when your bill arrives. A weekend in Morocco on standard UK roaming without a plan can cost £40-100 in data charges. A week in the USA can cost £100-200.

The preparation required to avoid this is minimal: check whether your UK plan includes roaming for your destination (text ROAM to 150 on EE, or check your network's app). If it does not, spend 5 minutes buying a travel eSIM from Airalo, BambooSIM or WorldSIM before you travel. The cost is £8-20 for the trip versus £40-200 unprepared.

Why compare on GadgetRank?

GadgetRank is an independent UK comparison site — not affiliated with any retailer, recycler or network. Every comparison is based on live price data. There are no paid placements or sponsored rankings. The best current offer appears at the top because it is the best current offer, not because of any commercial arrangement.

All retailers listed on GadgetRank meet minimum quality criteria: Trustpilot score of 4.0 or above, minimum 12-month warranty, battery health guarantee, and devices unlocked to all networks. This baseline means every option on GadgetRank is a trustworthy choice — the comparison is purely about price and any additional perks.
